I've just returned from ten days in the Hudson River Valley and New York City, accompanying a wonderful group of travelers on our East Coast Art Tour with artist and art historian John Paul Thornton. What a terrific combination of art, history, architecture, and memorable experiences!
We began in the Hudson River Valley, exploring the landscapes that inspired the Hudson River School of painting. Visits to the Thomas Cole House and Olana, the magnificent home of Frederic Edwin Church, brought the artists and their surroundings to life. Storm King Art Center offered something completely different, with contemporary sculptures set against the beautiful Hudson Valley landscape.
One of my most memorable experiences was visiting Union Church and seeing its extraordinary stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall. I was fascinated by how Chagall, a Jewish artist, created works that spoke so beautifully to the Christian congregation that commissioned them. What a remarkable intersection of art, faith, and history.
The Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum was another highlight for this history buff! There was so much to see and absorb that I only made it through his first two terms. I'll definitely be planning a return visit to explore his third and fourth terms and the extraordinary history of those years.
In New York City, one of my biggest discoveries was at the Hispanic Society Museum & Library, where we experienced the magnificent paintings of Spanish artist Joaquín Sorolla. I knew virtually nothing about Sorolla before this trip, but I was absolutely captivated by his work.
Now I understand why he is one of John Paul's favorite artists!
Our before-hours experience at MoMA was equally special. Having the galleries to ourselves allowed us to appreciate the art without the usual crowds. We certainly appreciated that privilege when the doors opened to the public and the galleries quickly filled with visitors!
Throughout the trip, John Paul's enthusiasm was contagious! His knowledge and ability to connect the artists, their work, and the history surrounding them brought so much more meaning to everything we saw. And, of course, there were wonderful meals, conversations, and friendships along the way.
This was such a special trip that John Paul is considering offering it again! Nothing has been scheduled, but if you would be interested in joining us for a future East Coast Art Tour, please let me know. I'd love to hear from you as we explore the possibility.
Warmly,
Lisa
