Every so often, I return to the question of what a travel advisor adds to a trip. Much of that value comes from work travelers never see. Once you approve your itinerary and place the deposit, the visible planning may appear complete. Behind the scenes, another important phase of our work begins.
If you have traveled with me on one of my group trips, you have seen this firsthand. I am constantly following up on details and adjusting anything that is not just right. That same attention continues behind the scenes for every trip my team and I manage. Our work is not simply answering questions as they come up. Experience helps us anticipate questions travelers might not even need to ask because we address the details in advance. We watch for changes, track important deadlines, and make sure the individual arrangements continue to work together.
The most valuable part of this work is the relationships we have developed with cruise lines, hotels, tour companies, and other travel partners. These relationships give us direct access to people who know their products and destinations in detail. We know whom to contact, how to communicate a traveler’s needs, and which questions will yield useful answers. When something changes, we can reach the appropriate people efficiently and keep the different parts of the trip working together.
And like a chef with a favorite recipe, I am not giving away every ingredient. Some of our methods are trade secrets, refined through years of experience, relationships, and an understanding of what can make a meaningful difference.
Before departure, we review the trip again with fresh eyes. Arrangements are reconfirmed, final documents are checked, and essential information is organized so travelers are not searching through months of emails while away. Our work does not stop when the trip begins. We continue monitoring arrangements while travelers are away and remain alert to changes that may affect what comes next. When an issue arises, we work with our contacts to help keep the trip moving.
Much of this happens quietly in the background, and that is exactly the point. From the day you approve your itinerary and place your deposit until the day you return home, my team and I remain focused on making your trip personal, thoughtfully coordinated, and cared for at every step.
Warmly,
Lisa
