Why This Journey Worked So Well

In my last newsletter, I shared reflections from Vietnam and Cambodia. There was so much to say about the destinations themselves that I barely touched on what it was like to experience the region with AmaWaterways.

And that deserves its own story…

I don't usually dedicate an entire newsletter to a travel partner. However, AmaWaterways took such exceptional care of our group of 25 travelers that it would be impossible to talk about this journey without recognizing the role they played in making it so successful.

From the moment we arrived in Hanoi until our departure from Ho Chi Minh City, everything felt seamless. Our Cruise Manager, AK, was with us throughout the journey, from Hanoi and our overnight experience in Ha Long Bay to the final days of the trip in Ho Chi Minh City. He struck that rare balance of being professional, organized, personable, and genuinely funny.

As someone leading a group, I also felt incredibly supported throughout the trip. Whenever a question or concern arose, AK's response was consistently the same: "You enjoy the trip. I'll take care of it." Having that level of support allowed me to spend more time enjoying the experience alongside our travelers rather than worrying about logistics. Quite honestly, that does not happen very often.

One of the things I appreciated most was that AmaWaterways didn't simply operate the river cruise. They curated the entire experience. Before continuing on to Siem Reap, we spent a night aboard a small vessel in Ha Long Bay, waking up surrounded by limestone karsts rising dramatically from the water. It was one of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever seen and a wonderful introduction to Southeast Asia. Like everything else on the trip, the logistics were seamless and allowed us to simply enjoy the experience.

Once onboard, the AmaDara was beautiful. The ship's warm wood finishes, thoughtful design, and intimate size felt perfectly suited to the region. Combined with a crew that quickly learned names, remembered preferences, and genuinely cared about the travelers onboard, it created an atmosphere that was both elegant and comfortable.

What impressed me most was the attention to detail. Excursions were exceptionally well organized, local guides were excellent, and travelers could choose experiences that matched their interests and activity levels. Every detail seemed thoughtfully considered.

After more than 60 cruises across ocean, river, and expedition ships, I have learned that no trip is ever truly perfect. What impressed me about AmaWaterways was how consistently they got it right. And when a traveler needed something a little different, they adjusted and found a way to make it work.

Great destinations are important, but how you experience them matters just as much. The combination of extraordinary destinations and an exceptional AmaWaterways team created an experience that was memorable for all the right reasons.

Warmly,
Lisa
